Diving The Scuba Ranch: Why This Terrell Oasis is a Texas Favorite

If you’re a diver in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, you don't need a plane ticket to find clear water and sunken treasures. Located just east of Dallas in Terrell, Texas, The Scuba Ranch is a premier spring-fed lake that has become the go-to training ground for Texas Scuba Academy students and seasoned pros alike.

Whether you are completing your Open Water checkouts or just looking for a "bubble therapy" weekend, here is everything you need to know about diving this Texas gem.

The Legend of "Sunkissed" the Shark
You can't talk about The Scuba Ranch without mentioning its most famous resident: Sunkissed. No, she’s not a real Great White, but this life-sized shark statue is the ultimate underwater photo op. Finding her is a rite of passage for every North Texas diver!

What to Expect Underwater
The lake is a 22-acre spring-fed quarry with depths reaching about 65 feet. One of the best parts about The Scuba Ranch is the abundance of underwater "attractions" designed to sharpen your navigation skills:

Sunken Wrecks: Explore boats, a school bus, and even a Cessna airplane.

Multiple Platforms: Perfect for practicing buoyancy and skills at various depths (standard depths include 15ft and 25ft platforms).

Local Wildlife: Keep an eye out for large catfish, bass, and the occasional freshwater jellyfish during the warmer months.

Why Texas Scuba Academy Trains Here
We choose The Scuba Ranch for our Dallas-area students because it offers a controlled, safe, and exciting environment.

Visibility: Being spring-fed, the visibility is often superior to other North Texas lakes.

Facilities: With easy-entry docks, gear benches, and onsite tank fills, it makes the logistics of a dive day seamless.

Community: There is a unique "tailgate" atmosphere at the Ranch. It’s a place to meet fellow divers, share stories, and grab a burger between dives.

Pro-Tips for Your Visit
Check the Temps: Like most Texas lakes, there is a distinct thermocline. Even if it’s 100°F outside, the water at 40 feet can be chilly. We recommend a 5mm or 7mm wetsuit for most of the year.

Bring a Surface Marker Buoy (SMB): It’s a large lake with boat traffic potential—safety first!

Plan for the Day: There are plenty of shaded picnic tables. Pack a cooler, bring some chairs, and make a full day of it with the Texas Scuba Academy crew.
