SDI Computer Nitrox Diver

Breathe smarter underwater. Nitrox gives you extended no-decompression limits, increased safety margins, and less fatigue after every dive — and it's easier to learn than most divers expect.

Nitrox is one of the most popular specialty certifications for a reason — the benefits apply to every diver, from beginners to advanced. If you want more bottom time, safer dives, and to feel fresher after a full day in the water, this course is for you.

  • Certified divers looking to extend their no-decompression time limits
  • Divers heading on a liveaboard or multi-dive trip who want every advantage
  • Anyone looking to advance their knowledge and dive smarter

  • SDI Open Water Scuba Diver, SDI Junior Open Water Diver, or equivalent — or current enrollment in one of those courses
  • Minimum age 18 (10 with parental consent)

The Science & Safety

  • Physiology of breathing enriched air mixtures
  • Advantages and disadvantages of nitrox
  • Equipment considerations for nitrox use
  • Understanding oxygen toxicity limits
  • How to safely use mixtures from 22–40% oxygen

Practical Skills

  • How to analyze a nitrox cylinder
  • Programming a dive computer for nitrox
  • Logging nitrox dives correctly
  • Analyze at least two nitrox cylinders
  • Program a nitrox computer to a mix between 22–40% oxygen

Nitrox certification opens doors on every dive trip. Most liveaboards and dive resorts offer nitrox fills — often at no extra cost — and certified divers get the full benefit. Upon completion you can dive with enriched air independently using your own computer.

More Bottom Time

Extended no-decompression limits mean longer dives at depth — the single biggest reason divers get nitrox certified.

Increased Safety

Greater safety margins on every dive. Nitrox gives you a buffer that standard air simply doesn't provide.

Less Post-Dive Fatigue

Divers consistently report feeling fresher after nitrox dives — a real difference on multi-dive days and dive travel.

  • 100% comprehension of questions at the end of each chapter in the SDI Computer Nitrox course
  • Analyze at least two nitrox cylinders
  • Log at least one nitrox dive
  • Program a nitrox computer to a mix between 22–40% oxygen

Stack your skills. Each specialty makes you a more capable, confident diver — and they all count toward your SDI Master Diver rating.

Do I need to do any open water dives for this certification?

No — the SDI Computer Nitrox course is academic only. You'll complete the coursework and practical skills (analyzing cylinders, programming your computer) without requiring open water dives. It's one of the quickest specialty certifications available.

Do I need my own dive computer?

You'll need access to a nitrox-capable dive computer to complete the programming requirement. Texas Scuba Academy can advise on options if you're looking to purchase your first computer — nitrox capability is standard on most modern models.

How long does the course take?

Most students complete the entire course in a single session — a few hours of focused study plus the hands-on cylinder analysis. We can often schedule it around your existing availability or pair it with another course.

Does nitrox certification count toward SDI Master Diver?

Yes — Computer Nitrox counts as a specialty credit toward the SDI Advanced Diver Development program and SDI Master Diver rating. It's also one of the fastest specialties to complete, making it a smart first step in building your certification stack.
