Under the Surface: Why Mammoth Lake Is a Texas Diver's Playground

The largest scuba-dedicated park in Texas — 65 acres of spring-fed water, 150+ submerged objects, and one very large prehistoric mammal waiting at the bottom.

At Texas Scuba Academy, we're often asked: "Where can I go to see more than just mud and catfish?" While Texas may not have the coral reefs of the Caribbean, it has something arguably more fun — Mammoth Lake. Located in Lake Jackson, this 65-acre spring-fed lake is the largest scuba-dedicated park in Texas, and an absolute must-dive for any student or certified diver in our community.

A Scavenger Hunt Like No Other

Mammoth Lake isn't just a place to practice buoyancy — it's an underwater museum of the bizarre and beautiful. With over 150 submerged objects connected by navigation lines, it's one of the best places in the state to practice your SDI or PADI Navigation specialty while actually having a good time doing it.

  • A C-130 Cargo Plane — Swim through the massive fuselage of a real military aircraft. The scale of it underwater is genuinely jaw-dropping.
  • The Colombian Mammoth — True to its name, a life-sized mammoth sculpture marks the spot where actual prehistoric fossils were discovered on-site. It's one of the most surreal photo ops in Texas diving.
  • Sunken Treasures — School buses, fire trucks, a WWII submarine, fighter jets, and dozens more. There's always something new to find no matter how many times you've been.

Perfect for Training and Skills

Whether you're finishing your Open Water checkouts with us or leveling up to Advanced Adventure Diver, Mammoth Lake offers exactly the right environment at every stage of your diving journey.

  • Depth for Everyone — Most attractions sit in the 35–40 foot range, but a deep hole reaches 75 feet for divers working on their Deep Diver certification.
  • Exceptional Visibility — No motorized boats, no fishing. As a dedicated dive park, Mammoth Lake consistently offers some of the best visibility in the state.
  • Great Amenities — Easy shore entries, sturdy gear benches, and a full-service dive shop on-site for air fills. Everything you need for a stress-free day of diving is already there.

Dive Day Logistics

  • 01 Entry FeeTypically around $25 per diver. Bring cash to avoid the 3% card processing fee — worth the extra trip to the ATM.
  • 02 What to BringYour C-card, a surface marker buoy (SMB), and a sense of adventure. Bring a 3mm or 5mm wetsuit depending on the season — the spring-fed depths stay cool year-round even when it's blazing on the surface.
  • 03 Post-DiveThere's plenty of room for grilling and tailgating after the tanks are empty. Pack a cooler, throw some burgers on, and hang out with the TSA crew. The post-dive social is half the experience.

Texas Scuba Academy heads to Mammoth Lake regularly. We run certification weekends and fun dives here throughout the season — it's the perfect place to meet your fellow divers, practice your skills, and see a piece of military history underwater. Whether you need checkouts or just want a great dive day, we'd love to have you with us.
