How the Crossover Works
- 01 Contact Texas Scuba AcademyReach out by phone or email. We'll confirm your eligibility, review your current certifications, and walk you through exactly what your crossover will look like.
- 02 Complete the ITI Professional Familiarization eLearningAccess the International Training Professional Familiarization Program online — covering SDI standards, procedures, and teaching systems. This is the academic foundation of your crossover.
- 03 Pass the Written ExamComplete the final written exam with a minimum score of 80%. Your instructor trainer will review anything you need to revisit before submission.
- 04 Meet with Your Instructor TrainerReview final crossover details, confirm all paperwork is complete, and get introduced to SDI's tools and resources.
- 05 Submit Your Paperwork to SDI HQYour completed crossover package — certifications, insurance where required, and course completion forms — is submitted to SDI Headquarters for activation.
- 06 Start Teaching as an SDI InstructorOnce activated by HQ, you're an official SDI Instructor — authorized to teach and certify SDI divers anywhere in the world.

Prerequisites
Common Questions
Do I need to do any in-water evaluations?
Most crossovers are entirely administrative and completed online — no in-water evaluations required. In some cases, depending on your agency or region, a practical evaluation may be needed. We'll confirm this before you start.
Will I keep my specialty instructor ratings?
Yes — all specialty instructor ratings you currently hold that have an SDI equivalent will be crossed over as part of your package. You don't lose anything you've already earned.
How long does the crossover take?
The eLearning portion can typically be completed in a day or two. Total processing time depends on paperwork submission and HQ review, but most crossovers are fully activated within a few weeks.
Can I keep teaching with my current agency after crossing over?
Yes — crossing over to SDI doesn't require you to give up your existing instructor credentials. Many instructors hold ratings with multiple agencies simultaneously.
What if I want to cross over to TDI as well?
The Professional Familiarization Program only needs to be completed once, even if you're crossing over to multiple International Training agencies including SDI, TDI, ERDI, or PFI.
