Diving the Blue Lagoon: Texas's Hidden Turquoise Oasis

Whether you're chasing visibility, getting certified, or just want a Saturday underwater — here's everything you need to know about diving the Blue Lagoon in Huntsville, TX.

If you've lived in Texas long enough, you know that "clear water" is usually a relative term. But tucked away just north of Huntsville lies the Blue Lagoon — a former limestone quarry that looks more like a slice of Cozumel than an East Texas watering hole.

With its striking turquoise water and towering pines, it has become the premier training ground for Texas divers. Whether you're gearing up for a big trip or just want to spend a Saturday underwater, here's everything you need to know.

The Underwater Experience

The first thing you'll notice is the visibility. On a good day you can see 20–30 feet — practically unheard of in most Texas lakes. The limestone geology that gives the water its signature blue-green color also keeps it unusually clear.

  • Depth — The lagoon averages 15–35 feet. Shallow enough for long bottom times, deep enough to feel like a real dive.
  • Terrain — No coral reefs here, but you'll find submerged boats, training platforms, and even a sunken airplane sitting on the bottom.
  • Wildlife — The limestone water chemistry makes it unique. You won't see many fish, but keep an eye out for dragonfly nymphs — the Blue Lagoon's quirky underwater residents.

Logistics for Divers

The Blue Lagoon is, first and foremost, a scuba training facility — and that's great news for divers because every amenity is built with us in mind.

  • Entry Fees — Expect to pay around $25 per diver. Pro tip: bring cash. Card machines in the East Texas woods can be unreliable.
  • Reservations — Highly recommended, especially on weekends. The park reaches capacity fast and certified divers can reserve their spot in advance.
  • Gear & Air — The on-site shop, Texan Scuba, is a full-service dive center. Need an air fill, a weight belt, or a rental piece? They've got you covered.

3 Tips for a Perfect Dive Day

  • 01 Go During the WeekIf you can sneak away on a Tuesday, do it. Visibility improves significantly when there aren't dozens of students practicing buoyancy on the bottom. Midweek dives at the Lagoon are some of the best in Texas.
  • 02 Bring a 3mm WetsuitEven in the Texas summer, the spring-fed water stays refreshingly cool. A 3mm suit hits the sweet spot for staying comfortable through multiple dives without overheating on the surface.
  • 03 No Pets, No GlassThe Lagoon enforces these rules strictly to keep the water clear and the environment safe. Leave the dog at home and pack your drinks in cans or plastic. No exceptions.

Final Thoughts

The Blue Lagoon isn't just a place to log dives — it's a community hub for Texas divers. Stories get swapped on the docks, new dive buddies get made, and more than a few people fall in love with the sport for the first time right here in these turquoise waters.

If you haven't checked it off your Texas bucket list yet, 2026 is the year to do it. The lagoon opens 7 days a week starting in May. We'll see you at the bottom.
