Diving The Scuba Ranch: Why This Terrell Oasis Is a Texas Favorite

Located just east of Dallas in Terrell, Texas, The Scuba Ranch is a premier spring-fed lake that has become the go-to training ground for Texas Scuba Academy students and seasoned pros alike. Whether you’re completing your Open Water checkouts or just looking for a “bubble therapy” weekend, here’s everything you need to know about diving this Texas gem.

The Legend of “Sunkissed” the Shark

You can’t talk about The Scuba Ranch without mentioning its most famous resident: Sunkissed. No, she’s not a real Great White — but this life-sized shark statue sitting on the bottom is the ultimate underwater photo op. Finding her is a rite of passage for every North Texas diver.

What to Expect Underwater

The Scuba Ranch is a 22-acre spring-fed quarry with depths reaching around 65 feet. What sets it apart from most Texas lakes isn’t just the visibility — it’s the sheer number of underwater attractions designed to make every dive interesting.

  • Sunken Wrecks — Explore boats, a school bus, and even a Cessna airplane resting on the bottom. Navigation skills get a serious workout here.
  • Multiple Platforms — Perfect for practicing buoyancy and skills at controlled depths. Standard platforms sit at 15 ft and 25 ft, giving you options for every level.
  • Local Wildlife — Keep an eye out for large catfish, bass, and the occasional freshwater jellyfish during the warmer months. Not Cozumel, but never boring.

Why Texas Scuba Academy Trains Here

The Scuba Ranch is our site of choice for Dallas-area students — and we don’t take that lightly. Here’s what makes it the right call every time.

  • Visibility — Being spring-fed, the water clarity is consistently superior to other North Texas lakes. On a good day you can see across the quarry.
  • Facilities — Easy-entry docks, gear benches, and on-site tank fills make the logistics of a full dive day seamless. Less time hauling gear, more time underwater.
  • Community — There’s a unique tailgate atmosphere at the Ranch. It’s a place to meet fellow Texas divers, swap stories on the dock, and grab a burger between dives.

Pro Tips for Your Visit

  1. Check the thermocline. Like most Texas lakes, The Scuba Ranch has a noticeable thermocline. Even when it’s 100°F on the surface, the water at 40 feet can be downright cold. We recommend a 5mm or 7mm wetsuit for most of the year.
  2. Bring a surface marker buoy (SMB). It’s a large lake with potential boat traffic. Deploy your SMB on ascent — safety first, every dive.
  3. Plan for a full day. There are shaded picnic tables, plenty of space to set up camp between dives, and a whole community of divers to meet. Pack a cooler, bring some chairs, and make a day of it with the Texas Scuba Academy crew.

Texas Scuba Academy trains here regularly. We host certification weekends and fun dives at The Scuba Ranch for our Dallas, Terrell, and DFW students. If you’re ready to start your scuba journey — or just want to join us for a dive day — we’ll meet you at the gate.
