What you'll learn

Knowledge Development

✓Surface support: communications when necessary and back-up procedures
✓Buddy system and buddy contact: contact with varied visibility, buddy lines, line signals, and close-proximity positioning
✓Navigation/charting: slate usage, pre-dive marking, pre-planning with charts, and directional determination
✓Disorientation: with/without a buddy, lost buddy, light failure, and emergency procedures
✓Special equipment: primary and backup lights (size, burn time, usage) and knives/cutting devices
✓Limited visibility diving: silt-out, psychological considerations, light usage, and preserving dark vision
✓Life lines and reels: line types, tie-offs, and directional markers, with line handling practiced on land before use underwater
✓Special emergency procedures for safe wrecks vs. hazardous or unsafe wrecks
✓Mapping the wreck: vertical, horizontal, and feature identification

Practical Training

✓Open Water Dive 1: pre-dive computer review, dive planning, light testing, area familiarization, basic charting outside the wreck, optional line use outside the wreck
✓Open Water Dive 2: dive planning, figuring surface interval, descent, team mapping, optional line use outside the wreck
✓Open Water Dive 3: dive planning, descent, optional line use inside the wreck
✓Open Water Dive 4 (optional): planned dive, explore as determined

Frequently asked questions

Non-penetration means you stay on the exterior of the wreck — swimming around and over it but not entering enclosed spaces. Limited penetration includes swim-throughs and areas where you can still see ambient light from the entry point. It requires additional skills including lifelines and reels, and has a higher minimum age requirement.
