Who it's for

This course builds on prior certification and experience — here's what you'll need before you start.

SDI Open Water Scuba Diver, SDI Junior Open Water Diver, or equivalentBase certification required
Minimum age 1810 years old with parental consent

What you'll learn

Knowledge Development

The aquatic environment: vision, light, sound, tides, currents, waves, and surge
Natural navigation: bottom contours, depth, amount of light, surge, currents, and underwater objects
Compass types (analog and digital) and their features
Compass use, estimating distance underwater, kick cycles, and time

Practical Training

Equipment set up, dive planning, and predive checks
Orientation and navigation skills, generally practiced first on the surface from shore
Practicing compass use on the surface: out-and-back plus square and triangle patterns
Performing a square pattern on the bottom
Performing a triangle pattern on the bottom
Maintaining buddy contact, equipment disassembly, and logging all dives

Frequently asked questions

Many modern dive computers have a digital compass built in — that qualifies. A dedicated analog wrist compass also works well. We'll cover the differences in class and can advise on what to use or purchase before your dives.
