Diving Athens Scuba Park: East Texas's Wreck Playground

If Texas has a dive site built specifically for people who love exploring wrecks, it's this one. Athens Scuba Park is a family-run, spring-fed quarry about 75 miles southeast of Dallas, and it has spent decades sinking boats, buses, and even airplanes on purpose — just to give divers something to find.

It's not a swimming hole that happens to have a few things on the bottom. Athens Scuba Park has been purpose-built for diving since 1987, and it shows in how deliberately the whole place is laid out.

A Wreck Diver's Playground

The headline feature here is the sheer number of things to see. Athens packs more deliberately-sunken structure into one lake than almost anywhere else in the state.

Sunken wrecks. More than 25 wrecks sit on the bottom, including a full-size passenger airplane, an upside-down school bus, boats, and even motorcycle frames.

Manageable depth. The lake tops out around 28 feet, which keeps most of the wrecks well within Open Water and Advanced recreational limits.

Clear, spring-fed water. Visibility typically runs 15 to 35 feet and can push past that on a good day, since the lake is spring-fed rather than runoff-fed like most East Texas lakes.

Steady temperature. Water stays a comfortable 76°F at depth most of the year, so a 3mm or 5mm wetsuit covers you in any season.

Planning Your Visit

Athens Scuba Park runs like an actual dive center, not just a lake with a gate — which makes it one of the easier East Texas sites to plan a trip around.

Hours. The park is typically open daily, with hours posted on their website; check before you drive since they can shift by season.

Passes. Day passes and season passes are both available, which makes sense if you're the kind of diver who'll want to come back and find every wreck.

On-site camping. Tent and RV camping are both available on site, with RV camping running Wednesday through Saturday — handy if you want to turn a dive day into a weekend.

Full-service shop. Unlike a lot of Texas quarries, Athens has an actual dive shop on site for air fills, rentals, and gear.

Final Thoughts

Athens Scuba Park earns its reputation as one of Texas's best wreck-diving destinations honestly — there's genuinely more to explore here than you can cover in a single day. For East Texas and DFW-area divers looking for something more interesting than another quarry wall, this is the one to put on the list.
